The Maritime history seminar 6.11.2008

 

Before the seminar all participants had aquantance with demonstration of PLT (Pneumatic Line Thrower) for safety services producing of LLC ISTA (Spb). There was discussed with Finnish Life-Boat Institution to consider the possibilities the production of these PLT in Finland.

 

 

  Peter the Great´s Sea fortress

     The Finnish part of the fortress, to-day, maintenance and documentation

       

 

Mr. Dr. Ove Enqvist held an interesting and important presentation on the sea /”world heritage” fortress chain. Most important message of the presentation was the common worry to protect the fortress chain on the Finnish Russian side for the next generations. His message was to the assembly to think and suggest of the concrete steps for the saving of the fortress chain. Another dimension is to highlight the raising of public awareness of the naval and military history sector and of the need for an integrated common policy.

 

Scientific employee Mr. Vladimir Kluchnikov presented the results of Russian researches of this history event.

 

The assembly found the proposal very interesting and important. This issue will be continued in forthcoming meetings.

    The documentation (archives) of the Peter the Great’s Fortress in Russia.

1.  Opening addresses

 

 The meeting was opened by Mr. A. M. Goroshko with the welcoming address. He expressed his gratitude to the assembly for hosting the meeting in Kronstadt.

 

The Chairman Mr. A. Varhavsky presented the agenda. The meeting adopted the agenda attached to this memory.

    

2.  Preparations of project co-operation of  the maritime museums in the Baltic

 

Possible themes for collaboration between Maritime museums and other related institutions in the Baltic Sea area

Cooperation in:

1. Exhibitions exchange

2. Common marketing strategy

3. International exhibition on ports

 

Other possible topics discussed in Kotka at the previous meeting of the project between maritime museums in the Baltic:

-  The recent changes in shipping as well its effects on seafarers themselves

-  The preservation of traditional maritime training standards and on the other the awareness and teaching of Maritime history in maritime training institutions

-    An international exhibition of ports

-   Sailing ships and their developing (from Rostock Maritime museum)

          -   Society Bizkon will be as coordinator in this project

 

The whole proposal was delivered for the participants in St. Petersburg on 7.11.2008 during the separate meeting with experts from Kotka, St. Petersburg and Kronstadt. (The proposal was delivered first time in September)

The assembly described the initiative as interesting and encouraged stakeholders to participate in the planned project.

 

3. Sea safety

Chairman of the Voluntary Maritime Rescue Society “Kronstadt”, Mr. Igor Kalinin

  

VMRS “Kronstadt”:

-        continues lifeboat activity;

-        took part in MRCC “St.Petersburg” rescue exercise;

-        reparation of the old rescue boat is coming

Supporters and voluntaries:

-        involved voluntaries of the Maritime Assembly of Kronstadt;

-        supported by Kronstadt’s private diving company;

-        involved voluntaries of Kronstadt Aviation Club;

Supported by the JS “North-West shipping company”.

 

      Russian partners have got the Finish-Estonian project application as a model.

      The Russian part is preparing the application for Eu with partners from Merikotka Research centre                          

      and Finnish Lifeboat Institution.

 

 Comments The Finnish Life Boat Institution by Mr. Kyösti Vesterinen

 

 The Finnish Lifeboat Institution is the umbrella organization for voluntary maritime rescue associations   in Finland.

 

 The first rescue centre was opened in Gogland (Suursaari) over 151-years ago

  -  the Finnish Lifeboat Institution was founded 1897

 There are 29 associations on the sea shore and 30 on lake area

 We provide search and rescue services to people in distress at sea and on inland waters.

-   2 000 sea rescue volunteers
-   over 140 rescue vessels
-   over 13 000 members

- we conduct more than 1000 search and rescue missions annually
- we assist about 2400 people in waters under our watch every year

 

 

 The Finnish Lifeboat institution has given the Finnish-Estonian application form to the Russian members to use:

-        Revival of voluntary Maritime search and rescue services in Estonia

 

 “Kronstadt has a good change to success in the work and with the application.”

-        we give our support: Merikotka and The Finnish Lifeboat Institution

 

 - It is possible to find a suitable SAR -vessel from Finland or England.                   

 

- a separate meeting was decided to held in St. Petersburg on next day, 7Th of November.

 

The assembly found the project proposal very important.

 

5.  Preparations for the Tall Ships´ Races in St. Petersburg and Turku in 2009

-        60 vessels have already registered to the race

-        we are waiting some 110 vessels

-        the scheme of berthing in Neva

-        water-buss transportation of crew members is necessary because of the traffic jams

-        wind band of the cadets from naval academies participate for the celebrations

-        safety arrangement plan is needed

 

It was mentioned that Kotka has good opportunities to get several vessels in Kotka during the race from St. Petersburg to Turku.

 

Volvo Ocean Race visit in St. Petersburg 25.-26.6.2009

- The Finnish Lifeboat Institution is ready assistance the race vessels in Finland territory

- one rescue vessels follows the race vessels all the time

- also in Kronstadt should be rescue vessels on work

6. Organization of water buses

 

The separate meeting of water tourism was decided to hold in St. Petersburg on next day, 7Th of November.

 

-     It was discussed e.g. of Maritime training, pleasure and sailing boats

-        the training and consultations between Russia and Finland, situation now and in future

-        City water passenger transport with countries (it was decided to hold a separate meeting later in St. Petersburg in near future). Mr. J. Salopelto and Mr. I. Kalinin decide the time.

            -    it was discussed of the possible co-operation or project

 

 7. 150 years from scientist À. Popov’s birthday in 2009

 

Arctic public Academy of Sciences

Professor Mr. Valery Mitko

Professor Mitko had first a short presentation about the Arctic public Academy of Science.

 

Mission:

“Fulfilment of research investigation for Northern territories development, improvement of Northern peoples life-being, assistance to St. Petersburg science potential realization for Arctic and North problems decision, assistance to Arctic projects and programs realization.”

 

A. J. Popov inventor of Radio

 

In 1900 a radio station was established under Popov's instructions on Gogland (Suursaari) to provide two-way communication by wireless telegraphy between the Russian naval base and the crew of the battleship General-Admiral Apraksin. The battleship ran aground on Hogland island in the Gulf of Finland in November, 1899.

The Russian participants are preliminary preparing the jubilee sailing to Gogland in 2009 as a memory of radio inventor Popov.

- sailing and radio expeditions to 150 –anniversary on the route: Spb- Kotka-Gogland

 

It was agreed that the Maritime history seminar named Popov will be held in Kotka 14 th of May as a celebration of birth of radio inventor Popov´s  150-anniverasry.

It was decided, that the Russian participants have duty to find 1-2 lectures and the Finnish 1-2 opponents. The seminar takes of 2 hours including interpretation. The preliminary time is 16.00 - o’clock Finnish time. The seminar is open for all audience.

The next history seminar and Maritime Assembly was invited Kotka 14.-15.5.2009

 

9. Other matters presented

 

Other matters were discussed during the supper and on the very next day in the following 3 meetings.

 

10. Closing of the assembly

 

The chairman Mr. Alexey Varshavsky expressed his thanks to all participants for the fruitful meeting and closed the assembly at 19.30 o’clock.
